Toner what is it and why do i need it??

I recently reviewed the Pixi Glow tonic which I have been using religiously.

But it occurred to me that not everyone is aware of what toner is or actually does.....
So here goes.... here is my humble interpretation....

Originally toner was designed to tighten and shrink pores mainly through the use of alcohol.
It removed traces of cleanser as well as any oil on the skin.

However, tended to dry out the skin by removing the oil which your skin needed, so your skin then produced more oil to compensate for the loss. Leaving your skin feeling tight temporarily but then more oily as your skin compensated.

Now a days toner is used to balance, hydrate and exfoliate the skin, after cleansing.
Helps the skin to absorb the products added on top.

Alcohol free toners are also known as lotions, tonics or elixirs

Balance - After cleansing the skins PH balance gets temporarily adjusted. The toner helps to restore balance, your skin would do it on its own but would take about half an hour.

Exfoliate - A acid based toner exfoliates and removes dead skin cells without the need for a harsh scrub containing beads that slough away the dead skin.

Hydrate - To help to moisturise and prevent dehydration. Adds moisture back into the skin usually contains aloe vera or glycerin.
Helps the skin to absorb more effectively hence you end up using less moisturiser or serum over time.

Two toner step process

First toner to exfoliate with acid. I use Pixi Glow tonic

Second toner prepares your skin for moisturiser by hydrating with glycerin or aloe vera or something similar.
I use La Roche Posay Physiological soothing toner this contains glycerin and is suitable for sensitive skin.

So when looking out for a toner you ideally want one WITHOUT ALCOHOL as this drys up the skin, making it dehydrated, hence you will use more moisturiser!
The body shop do some toners such as vitamin e, seaweed and aloe. I've been eyeing up the vitamin e one, next time there is a sale or offer on may have to give that a try!
You also want a toner that contains acid to gently exfoliate without the use of annoying beads. Such as the pixi glow, clarins exfolitor.

Hope this helps x

Take time for you. Take care and look after yourself.
Thanks for popping by luv acesparklestar xoxo
